Overby Hitting Center (Baseball) – 05/18/2016
Steve Overby and his son Joseph have made it their life goals to bring not only the ability to bat, but the ability to deal with your successes and failures through baseball. Teaching the physical and mental portion of batting that allows students to climb up the ranks and get better than would have been possible if they had just focused on the physical portion of baseball.
At Overby hitting center, you will notice that it’s not like most other hitting facilities. Other hitting instructors focus on “hitting” the ball, which is okay, but what Steve Overby teaches is much more than just hitting. He teaches the mind set of hitting as well as the basic fundamentals of hitting. When you go to his camps or individual lessons, he will be teaching you how to get every thought out of your head before you go up to bat, pitching, and/or fielding. That process is called “centering”. This is where you breathe in your noise and out of your mouth, and you do that until your vision gets a little blurry. When that happens oxygen has reached your brain and has calmed your brain down with thoughts and anything else that is in your head.
The steps to master this process takes a while! I (Michael Johnson) have been going for four years now and I just mastered his hitting process a year ago. It takes dedication and love to the game you play! But over time it’s worth it, Steve creates college hitters, I am one of them!
His lessons take 30-45 minutes every time you show up. He likes to see players once or twice a week, and that way the kids can work on what he teaches quicker. Another thing that Steve and his son Joseph teach will be shadow swings. Shadow swings are the biggest help because they teach you to practice when you are not with them. A shadow swing is when you take what they teach, straight line to the ball, and you do that without a bat in your hand about 50 times each day. It will improve your memory on how to get to the ball when you are hitting. Overby hitting center makes good hitters, into great hitters and they will be able to do most things that most other hitters can’t. They do a wonderful job with that!

Pro Jitsu On The Rise – 4/19/2016
Event held April 2, 2016
In the world of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and in this article we will focus on the Carolina’s in particular, nothing catches more attention or eyes than a new BJJ or MMA organization/promotion bursting onto the scene. One such promotion has set sail on the east coast and now going into their fifth show does not show signs of slowing down. Their latest show, ProJitsu 4, featured a multitude of talent from the under card to the main event, streamed live to the world on PPV, in front of their third consecutive sold out crowd.
The card featured several of the top brown belts in the region including Josh Murdock (Great Grappling) versus Gardner Watkins (Elite BJJ) who put on the most technical, fast pace, submission hunting match of the night. “Murdock and Gardner left their souls on the mat”, said one fan in attendance. World Champion Brian Edwards (Swamp Fox BJJ) took on Gis for Gis founder Brian Crandell (Evolution MMA) in a chess match in where, Edwards literally came out on top with a mounted triangle that he set up with shear finesse and technical skill.
As if that wasn’t enough, the co-main event featured 2016 Pan Am Champion, Amber Sehnke taking on the UFC fighter and Olympic Wrestling Silver Medalist, Sara McMann. In a match that started with McMann in serious trouble being put into a deep, no-gi paper cutter choke. extremely fast scrambles, high level takedowns, relentless forward pressure from McMann and even blood spilling all over the mat, Sehnke’s defense and heart brought the crowd to their feet as the 15 minute time limit ended the match in a draw. The Main Event featured two time World Champion Guybson Sa taking on Abu Dhabi Pro Cup Champion and Daniel Gracie Black belt, James Booth. Both fighters started the bout with a bit of a feeling out process and quickly escalated with Guybson driving into a double leg that powered its way off the mat. After the reset and James Booth displaying an excellent guard game, Guybson was able to secure an ankle lock and threaten a submission.
Booth, being a leg lock specialist himself, negated the threat but the World Champion had other plans and turned it into a modified, belly down, heel hook he calls the “Guybson Lock”, ending the match with the 11th submission of the night.
ProJitsu is the largest Pro grappling event in the south east and will be working its way up the east coast in the near future with it’s first stop being New Jersey. Rumors for ProJitsu 5 include Jeff Monson and Marcelo Cohen. If you haven’t been to a ProJitsu event, you need to go. You can check them out at www.pro-jitsu.com and can also watch the entire PPV event of ProJitsu 4 on their YouTube channel. The results for ProJitsu 4 are below.
